SculptureCenter: Elevating Contemporary Sculpture and Artistic Innovation
Since its founding in 1928 by artists, SculptureCenter has continually played a pivotal role in the contemporary art scene by championing the power of sculpture to inspire innovation and independent thought. Rooted in New York and with an international reach, this institution facilitates dialogues and showcases the transformative potential of sculpture within a broader cultural, historical, and aesthetic context.
SculptureCenter is more than a traditional art space; it's a dynamic forum that bridges artists and audiences. It achieves this through its core activities: thought-provoking exhibitions, commissions for new artworks, and the creation of scholarly resources. These initiatives aren't limited to established artists but also encompass emerging talents, nurturing new ideas and research in the realm of contemporary sculpture.
EARLIER CAREER
One of SculptureCenter's hallmarks is its commitment to introducing emerging artists. The institution commissions high-quality work and offers direct support, including production funds and curatorial guidance. This investment in artists extends beyond exhibition spaces, with free public events and programs designed to encourage dialogue among diverse audiences. These events include lectures, panel discussions featuring leaders in the contemporary art world, readings, workshops, video screenings, and live performances. SculptureCenter also contributes to the discourse through publications, such as exhibition catalogs and artist books.
FURTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Relocating to Long Island City in 2001 expanded the institution's reach. Since then, SculptureCenter has introduced the work of over nine hundred artists through its annual exhibition program, solidifying its position as one of New York's most prominent kunsthalles. What sets SculptureCenter apart is its values: investment, inclusiveness, independence, transparency, and rigor.
CURRENT HIGHLIGHTS
This reputation stems from its dedication to spotlighting underrecognized and emerging artists, many of whom have risen to successful and celebrated careers. These include Nairy Baghramian, Sanford Biggers, Liz Glynn, Rashid Johnson, Anicka Yi, Simone Leigh, and more. SculptureCenter continues to shape the evolving landscape of contemporary sculpture, guiding artistic innovation and redefining the boundaries of this dynamic art form.*
